Build Jake's Place

History of Build Jake's Place

Jacob Myles Cummings-Nasto ("Baby Jake") was beloved by many and left this world all too soon as a result of a rare cardiac medical condition. Jake always wore a smile. That smile was never bigger than when he was at a playground. Although Jake was unaware that his illness kept him from accessing many components of a typical playground, his family was not.

Jake's family chose to honor his memory by creating a specially designed all-inclusive playground based on their belief that EVERY child deserves a chance to play, regardless of physical limitations.

Through the combined efforts of Build Jake's Place Board of Directors, the Camden County Freeholders and the Camden County Department of Parks, Jake's Place became a reality when the first Jake’s Place inclusive playground opened at Challenge Grove Park in Cherry Hill, NJ on October 15, 2011. The playground stands as a monument not only to the memory of "Baby Jake", but to the hard work, generous spirit, and boundless love of the community. The playground was funded in part by CVS Pharmacies, along with hundreds of local families, businesses, individuals and children in the community, and was built by caring hands of local volunteers.

In 2018, Jake’s Law was passed in the state of New Jersey. Named in honor of Jake Nasto, the law allows for counties, municipalities and townships to apply for grants through the state’s Green Acres program. With a total of over 75 million dollars in grants awarded between 2023 and 2025, New Jersey will soon have a total of 97 new inclusive playgrounds throughout the state.

After four years of dedicated fundraising, the second Jake's Place inclusive playground opened in Delran, New Jersey, in the summer of 2019. In addition to building inclusive play spaces, Jake's Place founded and continues to operate the Camden County New Jersey Miracle League, established in 2014—a baseball league designed for children and adults with disabilities. Each Miracle League player is paired with a non-disabled buddy, reinforcing our commitment to true inclusion through shared play.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, The Esther & Pedro Rosenblatt Foundation, Jake's Place also organizes "Days of Play" in partnership with local school districts. These special events bring students with disabilities to our Cherry Hill playground for a full day of fun, with all transportation and lunch costs fully covered.

After much thought and consideration, in June, 2025, with the blessing of Jake’s family, the decision was made for Build Jake’s Place officially change its name to Our View. Although operating under a new name, the nonprofit remains committed to providing all-inclusive play opportunities for children and adults with disabilities through advocacy, awareness building, programming, and sharing our expertise with like-minded individuals and organizations. We are dedicated to aid in improving individual and collective relationships with those in and outside of the disability community.
